Crashes, failed handshakes, endless loading and the dreaded cache errors. The twelve problems that account for most FiveM issues, and how to actually fix each one.
Most FiveM problems come from a small number of causes. Work through these in order — the early ones are the most common by a wide margin, and it's worth ruling them out before you start deleting things.
Symptoms: FiveM can't find the game, closes immediately, or fails during setup.
Launch GTA V normally through Steam, Epic or the Rockstar Games Launcher and reach the main menu. First-run setup creates files FiveM depends on. Do this once and a surprising number of problems disappear.
Symptoms: Empty or near-empty server list, servers you know exist don't appear, connections rejected outright.
Since 21 July 2026 there are two clients — Legacy and Enhanced — and they cannot join each other's servers. If you installed Enhanced, you'll find almost nothing to join, because general player access hasn't opened and few servers have migrated.
Install FiveM Legacy unless you have a specific reason not to.
Symptoms: Install fails partway, FiveM vanishes after launch, files disappear from the install folder.
FiveM injects into GTA V, which is behaviourally indistinguishable from a cheat to most antivirus heuristics. False positives are routine.
Add exclusions for your FiveM install folder, your GTA V folder and the FiveM cache directory. Third-party suites — Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, Kaspersky — are more aggressive than Defender here.
Symptoms: Permission errors, cache corruption, files that won't write, problems that come back after you fix them.
Two culprits. C:\Program Files has permission restrictions that break FiveM's ability to write to its own directory. Worse, OneDrive, Dropbox and Google Drive lock files mid-write and corrupt caches — and Windows now syncs Desktop and Documents to OneDrive by default.
Move the install to something like C:\FiveM. This fixes a category of problems people otherwise chase for hours.
Symptoms: Crashes on joining one specific server, missing textures, "failed to load" messages, infinite loading screens.
The single most useful fix in FiveM. Close FiveM, open your FiveM Application Data folder, and delete the cache folder — or its priv subfolder if you only want to clear server data.
You'll re-download server assets on next join, so it's slow but harmless. If a specific server broke after an update, this is almost always the answer.
Symptoms: Entitlement or authentication failures, launcher errors, immediate exit on start.
FiveM needs the Rockstar Games Launcher present and signed in. Open it, confirm you're logged in, and check for pending launcher updates — an out-of-date launcher fails in ways that don't clearly say so.
If it's persistently broken, sign out and back in, or reinstall the launcher itself.
Symptoms: Crashes on load, crashes at the loading screen, graphical corruption, instability under load.
Update from NVIDIA or AMD directly rather than through Windows Update, which lags badly. For a persistent problem, use DDU to remove the old driver cleanly before installing.
Custom RP servers push far more assets through the renderer than base GTA V, so driver issues that never showed up in single player can appear immediately on FiveM.
Symptoms: Crashes across multiple servers, complaints about missing or invalid game files.
Verify your install: Steam via Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity; Epic via the three dots → Manage → Verify; Rockstar Launcher via Settings → your game → Verify Integrity.
Also relevant if you've ever installed single-player mods. Remove them. Scripthook, menus, replaced vehicle files and modified update.rpf archives all conflict with FiveM. FiveM needs a clean GTA V.
Symptoms: Kicked at the connection stage, whitelist messages, queue positions that never move.
Not your problem to fix — it's usually one of: you're not whitelisted, you're banned, the server is full and queuing, the server is restarting, or your Cfx.re account isn't linked properly.
Check the server's Discord before troubleshooting your own install. Their announcements channel usually explains it.
Symptoms: Timeouts, disconnects mid-session, failure to download server assets.
Try in order: restart your router; switch to a wired connection if you're on Wi-Fi; disable any VPN; and if you're on a school, work or hotel network, accept that it's likely blocking the required ports and try elsewhere.
Occasionally an ISP-level issue affects a particular server's host. If others report the same problem in Discord, it isn't you.
Symptoms: Crashes on large servers, out-of-memory errors, failures partway through asset downloads.
Heavy roleplay servers are demanding. 8 GB of RAM is genuinely marginal now; 16 GB is the realistic baseline. Server caches also grow quietly — check free space on whichever drive holds your cache, not just C:.
Symptoms: Something not covered above.
FiveM writes CitizenFX.log in its application data folder. Open it, scroll to the end, and read the last entries before the crash. It frequently names the resource or file that failed.
If you need help, post that log rather than a description. "It crashes" gets no useful replies anywhere; a log gets an answer in minutes.
If you don't want to diagnose anything, this sequence resolves the majority of cases:
